I decided to apply to Cornell relatively late in the admission process, so I don't have any advice about starting out early. I'd say boards, test scores, and grades are important, but what's most important is being able to market yourself as an individual and to make a case as to why the university should select YOU over the other applicants (you can do this through the essay questions and supplemental material). As an architecture school applicant, I made sure that my portfolio for admission reflected not only who I was, but my talent levels and skills as an artist and aspiring architect. In addition, be honest throughout the process. Inflating your resume and personal acheivements can only get you so far. Lastly, make sure you visit campus either before or after you get admitted, and go during the normal academic school year.

With Architecture, I was required to have an alumni interview, as well as submit a portfolio. If you think you can get a portfolio together, architecture is the best program (again) in the country, so go for it. Don't talk about playing with LEGO's as a kid, talk about enjoying public spaces or something a little more original.

Since I applied for a specific major I really focused on putting together my architecture portfolio. I had also gone to a summer program at Cornell summer of my Junior year of high school and try my hand at the rigorous courses. That experience was wonderful and caused my to decide to go to Cornell for undergrad, I have since realized that summer programs in universities are geared to give you the rosiest picture and the staff treat you much better as a 'potential' student. When you become an actual student you are taken for granted, since you become stuck in the system to graduate and must continue paying for the rest of your education.
